In times of anxiety, go back to your WHY

Lightbulb moment: "There is one datum amongst the complexity which never changes: what you stand for. Your market may be uncertain but your mission shouldn’t be. Procrastination is caused by uncertainty and ever changing options and details. Action is found in certainty, in the big picture, in what you stand for. In times of anxiety, go back to WHY. If your WHY is not powerful enough, make it simpler and more emotional."

— Alan Clayton, Chairman, Revolutionise

I am anxious. Unusually so. The last two years have infected me with a sort of low level social anxiety, mild agoraphobia and a nagging sense of loneliness. I am also anxious about finances, media, the economic outlook, the news, the mental health of my family, colleagues, clients and myself.

It appears I am not alone. Our recent market scan has told us that leaders are most anxious about

  • Trying to get their head around the ‘new normal’ and what the future might hold.

  • Defining their strategies and communications for the ‘new normal.’

  • Aligning and focussing teams that risk fragmentation and (more) anxiety.

  • Getting people all fired up and energised all over again.

What beats anxiety? Action.

Inaction creates worry, action relieves it.

So how do you act amid uncertainty? The ability to make decisions and take action even amongst confusion, fluidity and ambiguity is the defining characteristic of an effective leader. While those tasked with executing plans need the precision and certainty of fixed parameters in order to act, the effective leader accepts they will always live with uncertainty and:

  • Constantly scans the changing and evolving data and news.

  • Makes a decision on focussed action based on the data available, not on the knowledge they wish they had.

  • Commits to that decision.

  • Trusts themselves to learn and adapt as the future presents itself and evolves.

There is one datum amongst the complexity which never changes: what you stand for. Your market may be uncertain but your mission shouldn’t be.

Procrastination is caused by uncertainty and ever changing options and details. Action is found in certainty, in the big picture, in what you stand for.

In times of anxiety, go back to WHY.

If your WHY is not powerful enough, make it simpler and more emotional.
